China is now using Disney characters to help teach English to children. Two of the characters currently being used for the new program are Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck – although we’re a bit confused as to how Donald can be of much use since his voice is hard to understand even if you know the English language…
The Walt Disney Company’s goal is to teach English to 150,000 children a year by 2015. Disney also opened its first English school in Shanghai, China two years ago and is now planning on opening 20 by the end of this year! By 2015 Disney hopes to have 148 schools running with class sizes of no more than 15.
It is being reported that 96 hours of class time costs the equivalent of $2,200 US Dollars.
Andrew Sugarman, the head of Disney English in China said about the program:
All the content is related to a Disney property in some way…A side benefit is broader exposure to Chinese consumers and to build familiarity with the rich heritage of Disney storytelling.
Interesting! What do you think about this?
