It is being reported that Nicolas Cage will not be returning for the sequel to the hit Ghost Rider franchise because of another film franchise that he has had even more success with National Treasure. Disney is working with producer Jerry Bruckheimer who is also producing the soon to be released Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time movie staring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Word on the street is that Sony’s Columbia Pictures who holds the rights to make Marvel’s Ghost Rider has to start filming by November 14, 2010 to keep the rights to the film or else they revert back to Marvel, well guess who owns Marvel now? You guessed it, Disney so it’s in Columbia Pictures best interest to start filming the movie right away even if Cage isn’t in it.
We think this is a step in the wrong direction not having Cage involved, but when it comes to money the studios have been known to reinvent the movie to fit their particular needs as we are seeing with the new Spider-Man prequel.
Columbia Pictures has asked Marvel for an extension on their contract but it’s not very likely that Marvel/Disney will give it to them. That is kind of funny if you ask us and to be honest we think Disney could make the movie better than the original one from Columbia even if Cage was not involved.
