Cancer Patient Gets His Trip to Disney World

We love stories like this. Harvey Mesler, a 43-year old cancer patient, loves Disney. ‘I’m a Disney geek’, he says. ‘It’s a place I can go and not worry about anything.’

Mesler has metastatic melanoma and is in Stage IV category, and he and his family desperately need something to get their mind off of things. He’s ready to make some memories with his family that don’t include his cancer treatments.

So the Waterford police and fire benevolent funds, Oakland County co-workers and businesses at the airport stepped up and contributed nearly $6,000 to Mesler, so he and his family can spend five days at Disney World in Florida later this month.”He has such a buoyant, positive attitude. There isn’t much in life that he’s missed,” said David VanderVeen, director of the county’s Central Services department.

The family has been to Disney World several times and are expecting this to be one of the best trips yet. “If I could retire there, I’d be there right now,” Mesler said.
